About the Artist

Sophia Moreau's artistic practice is to reimagine a particular set of found objects, incorporating them with the natural and the human. Gilded frames are not merely hung, they reach out and climb the walls. Leather bound books contain not only words but entire worlds. 

There is a popular notion that artists shouldn't be intellectuals — that the artist is some semi-conscious oracle, channeling inspiration from the ether. While some artists do describe their practice this way, it is not universal, and Moreau stands as a striking counter to that idea. Her work is dense with intention, built on a foundation of prodigious reading and scholarly inquiry into the fields of medicine, ecology, theology, and art history. All of this study is distilled into dynamic visual form, so that a single piece can hold someone's attention for hours, revealing deeper layers of meaning the longer they look.

Her pieces are not all assertion though. There is a question that comes up time and again: what comes after calamity? After a child dies or the soul is torn apart or the earth destroyed? She imagines hopefully that there is growth; that life slowly yields from the debris.
